Chapter Six

Jake entered the sleepy town and parked on one of the side streets. He got out and stretched after that long-ass ride. Luckily he had contacts in some low places that helped him find Milo’s address. But that information had come at a steep price. A price Jake still owed some unsavory characters.

He would take care of that debt just as soon as he got what he'd come for. His GPS told him he was a few blocks away, but Jake would wait until the town came to life before he knocked on Milo’s door.

He needed time to think through his plan. As he leaned against his car, guilt tried to work its way into Jake’s chest. He didn’t want to use the kid as a pawn in this, but what choice did he have? There was no way he could pay the debt on his own, and he knew without a doubt that it had been Milo who had flushed his stash.

The drugs had been in the house when Alice had taken off. Jake had been surprised she’d made it to her car and put the baby inside with that many drugs in her system. Liquid Wrath should have killed her instantly.

Jake jumped and backed away when Myne and Yante shimmered into view next to him. Jake looked around, but there was nowhere for him to go. He had a blue shadow elf on either side of him.

“Do you think you can run from us?” Myne snarled at him. “Where do you think you can hide?”

Jake wished to god he’d never placed that bet. He’d done it hoping he could come up with the money he owed the Unseelie, but instead, he’d lost what little money he’d had.

“I’ll have it by the end of the week,” Jake said.

Myne narrowed his green eyes. “Do you think he’s playing us, Yante?”

When Jake had first met the two, they’d been charming as fuck. But after he’d lost his bet, they’d become his worst nightmare.

“We normally kill people rather than listen to their pleas,” Yante said with a smirk. “Do you think we should kill him, Myne?”

This was a sick game to them, and Jake was angry but also ready to piss himself. “I’ll have your money, plus interest.”

Myne leaned in close, towering over Jake as he narrowed his eyes and spoke in a scary, deep voice. “Fuck with us and we’ll make you wish you were never born.”

“But we’ll torture you first,” Yante said as he leaned in just as close as the other elf was. “I’ll make you scream for weeks before I gut you.”

“You have until the end of the week,” Myne said. “Friday at midnight. That’s your deadline. Literally.”

The two shimmered away, leaving Jake standing there shaking like crazy. He collapsed against the car as he tried to suck in enough air to breathe.
